3/21/2023 0 Comments Renpy coding editra![]() ![]() Yay! We can write dialogue with him now! But where DO we write dialogue, anyway? How we gonna do this. My main character is Kermit, and so I’ll edit this into… Again, it’s just a matter of whether you want to type your character’s full name every time. Contrarily, if you don’t want to bother with this part, you can use this setup insteadĪnd it’ll do the same thing. However, if you don’t want to type “Eileen” every time you want her to talk, you just have it type “e” and the game will now know. To clarify - Eileen is what will actually show for a name. And “Eileen” is telling renpy what their name is.So the basic setup isĭefine what you’ll type = Character (” Name of character”) “Character” is telling renpy it’s a character. The “e” is what you’ll type so your characters name comes up over the dialogue, indicating who’s speaking. This is where you set up the character names, and later on, their images. Now onto the part you’ve all been wanting to know - What the heck does all this mean? Let’s break it down, and start the actual tutorial.ĭefine Is a command you’ll be using a lot before the game starts. Screens.rpy, options, rpy, and gui.rpy are also essential for flow of control and appearance, but script.rpy is where you’ll be putting the actual game. The file we see here is Script.rpy and it is literally the game. ![]() You’ll be prompted to download Editra when you first go to open your files, and if you’re not prompted, you can find the downloads here! After you have that, you can open your files and… oh boy. Y ou’ll have to download an editor to view your files. With how customizeable Renpy is, you can change all it later…You might want to, they don’t give you much variety. This part doesn’t matter, it’s really just what color theme you want to start out with. Oh nooo! Another choice screen!!! This one is really up to personal preference and how big your monitor is, such things as that, but I personally use 1280x 720. You can’t use fancy text to my knowledge, nor can you use a directory name, just type in the basic name you intend the players to know your game by! (This can be changed later!) I named mine “Kermits Day Out” because I have NO self control. Generally, I just use “New GUI Interface,” and that’s what this tutorial will use, So let’s press that From this point on, we’ll be under a readmore. You’re met with a choice screen instantly. When you first open Renpy, you’ll be met with this.Īs you can see, I already have two projects in the making, but all that aside, we’ll be making a new project. This tutorial is designed for those with NO knowledge of the program, or coding. So! Expect to see mundane stuff here and there, you can skip it if you know those bits already. ![]() Note this is LITERALY step by step, with images included. Welcome to my first tutorial! I hope to explain a bit about Renpy’s functions with this, without going too indepth yet. ![]()
